The world of music was grief stricken when the legendary Ronnie James Dio passed after a strenuous battle with stomach cancer. Dio was a vocalist in such well known bands as Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Elf, Heaven and Hell and of course, Dio.

Dio ignored the symptoms of his illness for quite some time and so in his wake the Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund was formed. Dio’s long term manager and wife, Wendy Dio  asked that instead of sending food and flowers to his family, for everyone to donate to the Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund.  Many of us did so, but do not feel as if it was enough.  This fund is a non-profit organization.

“The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund was formed to bring awareness and education about cancer with the understanding that cancer screening and prevention is of vital importance in avoiding this deadly disease that robs families of their loved ones,” as stated on the SU&S Facebook page.

For breast cancer awareness there is the Susan G Komen Foundation and every year they have a race to raise money, called “The Race for The Cure.” People should be educated on all forms of cancer especially the forms that men are prone to because men are less likely to go to a doctor.

For the Stand Up and Shout organization, in honor of our beloved Ronnie James Dio a concert should be held traditionally every year near the anniversary of his death.

The SU&S Facebook page further states that the philosophy stems from the notion of “Knowledge Equals Power.” Cancer screening allows people to effectively plan strategies to deal with the disease early on and affords a better chance to overcome the cancer. The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund was formed to bring awareness and education about cancer with the understanding that cancer screening and prevention is of vital importance in avoiding this deadly disease that robs families of their loved ones.”

The mission statement provided by the organization is as follows:

The fund is committed to providing free cancer screening programs and testing to all people regardless of their ability to pay. It will support community outreach programs and help provide the necessary equipment and personnel to test and screen people for cancer. It will also provide financial support to those individuals and families afflicted with cancer that cannot access treatment due to the overwhelming financial burden of medical treatments. The fund is committed to the early detection and prevention of cancer through facilitating access to medical screening and medical educational programs. It will support programs designed to integrate medical knowledge into local communities such as cancer screening programs, education on nutrition in cancer prevention, exercise and overall wellness. The goal of the fund is to reduce the risk of developing life threatening cancers by offering access to preventative medical services, furthering the commitment for patients to access to quality medical care related to cancer, the fund seeks to assist families burdened by the cost of caring for loved ones with cancer.

Many of you may be asking yourselves, “But what can I do to help?”

The first thing you can do is click the banner at the top of this blog or in the sidebar. It will take you to the official Ronnie James Dio website where you can make a donation. You don’t have a credit or debit card? No problem, the fund takes Paypal payments. For those unfamiliar with Paypal, it is an online payment system that may be linked to your bank account and credit cards. The donation is easy and it takes less than five minutes.

Another way you can donate is by making purchases of Dio merchandise off of the official page.

Other ideas include having people donate a dollar for a ticket and have a drawing for prizes.  Auctions are a great way to raise money. You can also have a fund raiser dinner party and charge a set amount per plate and send out invitations to people in your community. You can even theme it around Dio. He would probably get a kick out of that. Make Stand Up and Shout about cancer shirts then donate the profits to the organization (this would require permission from the organization).

Our lovely photographer Sarah Dunbar even offered up the idea of a boy toy auction. In this scenario women bid on having dinner with chosen men to be auctioned off. If you own a bar, set aside a Stand Up and Shout Fund Raiser night. You can do this annually or as many times a year as you like, again this can be themed. Throw an annual festival in Dio’s honor for Stand Up and Shout. You can also volunteer to help care for and entertain cancer patients. Studies show that laughing has healing powers and children always love mentors. You can donate time to help out various cancer organizations.

This disease does not discriminate; it will take anyone of any race, creed, color, nationality, religion and age.

Shannon Curtis tours new single

I first met Shannon Curtis when she was touring the college circuit back in 2010. Curtis is a true singer/song writer. Listening to her heartfelt performance, her music became instantly likeable and relatable. As she tells her stories, a feeling of familiarity arises.

At the end of Curtis’ performance, I interviewed her for the campus TV station and purchased a CD. My daughter insists that I bring her the CDs of artists I interview. One spin of the CD and the kid was hooked.

I would like to shoot the person who invented repeat play, but if my child is going to drive me crazy with repeated music, at least it’s good music. As I jokingly griped Curtis out in an e-mail, I informed her that her “music is like crack for tweens.”

Over the last year, Shannon Curtis has been living and breathing in the walls of my home as my daughter consistently plays the music over and over. I can’t complain too much because it’s much better than my daughter’s other favorite CD, Taylor Swift.

My daughter’s favorite song is “Boomerangs and Seesaws” off of the 2010 album, I play the piano and sing love songs. The song was also previously released on her 2007 EPBoomerangs and Seesaws. Other EPs include, Paris Can’t Have You from 2008 and Why Don’t You Stay? from 2009.

I play piano and sing love songs is Curtis’ first LP. It is all piano and vocal arrangements and includes some of her most popular songs from her first three EPs. Other songs on the LP include, “Before The Sun,” “Don’t Call Me,” “Lay Me Down,” “Unfinished Business,” “Wasted,” “Happens Every Day,” “I Like To Think,” “Leave You Behind,” “Why Don’t You Stay?” and my personal favorite “I’m Ruined.”

Curtis is from Los Angeles, California, where her producer/mixer husband Jamie Hill works with her closely on her music. Her song “Before the Sun” was featured on MTV’sThe Hills. She has sold nearly 10,000 albums and is currently touring her new single, “Brightest Light in the Room.”

“Brightest Light in the Room” was released digitally worldwide by Saint Cloud Records on May 31, 2011. Saint Cloud has also released a limited collector’s-edition “Brightest Light” single, on audiophile-quality CD; the individually hand-stamped and serialized recycled chipboard packages include five remixes, a radio edit, an instrumental version, an a cappella, an exclusive B-side, and a miniature collectible print of an original artwork created for the song by artist Katie Zeigler (www.ktblue.com).

The single was spurred when one of Curtis’ fans asked her to write a song for a marriage proposal. It was written for two retired U.S. Army servicewomen. The couple became fans of Curtis’ music on Pandora Internet Radio. A recent press release revealed that the couple of 10 years were on separate deployments to Iraq. They say her music helped them to find calm in the midst of war.

For merchandise and music visit her store here.

It is not hard to see Curtis has a courageous heart. Her strong beautiful voice roars out the lines, boldly and melodically.

In the face of a world which is jaded by fear of emotion, Shannon Curtis still has the courage to love.

Five Finger Death Punch knocks out a third album

Five Finger Death Punch knocks out a third album

Single, “Under and Over It” debuts upcoming album

I was first turned on to this band by a friend in the summer of 2009. She introduced them to me by showing me the video to one of their hit singles, a ballad called “The Bleeding.” I rewound the video over and over so I could listen to each part individually.

The thing that caught my attention first was the way the two guitarists fed off of each other. I was hooked. I went on to the bass and then the drums.

“Just listen to the lyrics already,” my friend exclaimed.

As I listened to the lyrics I realized, this band really gets it. There was finally something new that was aggressive enough to stand out and shine in my collection with bands such as Prong, Rage Against The Machine and Pantera. It is the kind of music that gives you “lead foot” before you know it as you are driving down the road.

Over the last couple of years I have explored the power driving sounds of Five Finger Death Punch further. The band released a crushing cover of Bad Company’s song “Bad Company.” It stayed to true to the original while giving it that Five Finger Death Punch twist.

With the combination of many scathing, grinding hard songs and graphic, emotional power ballads, Five Finger Death Punch is the same as the testosterone driven, metal music that has kept me ten foot tall and bullet proof for years.

Five Finger Death Punch has been around since 2005 from Los Angeles, Ca. The first album “The Way of The Fist” came out in 2007.

Making its way across the US while playing music festivals over the years, this band has made quite a name for itself and gained the respect of the hard to please aggressive music fans.

People say, “There are no more really ‘big bands’ around anymore,” or “The era of the ‘great bands’ is over. Well I think this band comes pretty darn close.

The current lineup of Five Finger Death Punch includes, founding member guitarist Zoltan Bathory, drummer Jeremy Spencer, vocalist Ivan Moody, guitarist Jason Hook and the most recent addition to the band, bassist Chris Kael.

Today, July 7, 2011, Five Finger Death Punch released a new single.

“Under and Over It” is the debut for Five Finger Death Punch’s third album, American Capitalist. The album will be available in stores on October 11th, 2011. If you can’t wait, grab the single and give it a spin.

The Birthday Massacre is back to massacre your dreams with ‘Imaginary Monsters’

The industrial album you’ve all been waiting for

Visit the website www.thebirthdaymassacre.com

From the band who brought you the haunting song, “Happy Birthday,” The Birthday Massacre is releasing a new EP, Imaginary Monsters. Few bands of the industrial genre really know how to make themselves standout with the likes of the genre’s grandfathers, Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, but this Canadian band does exactly that.

It is true, bands like The Razor Blade Dolls, Ink Dot Boy and The Birthday Massacre all give industrial a new voice for the new generation, but the reason The Birthday Massacre stands out is the way their tales are told with a haunting female voice. The voice of The Birthday Massacre is Chibi, who delivers her performances with dynamic range and through creepy whispers.

The other band members include Nate Manor on bass, Rainbow on guitars/programming, M. Falcore on guitars/programming, Rhim on drums and Owen on keyboard.

“Recording this EP reminded me that I actually do enjoy writing and recording with Chibi,” said Rainbow in a recent press release. “I really enjoyed seeing the song ‘Left Behind’ come together.“

Imaginary Monsters also includes remixes of tracks from their 2010 album, Pins and Needles, by Combichrist, SKOLD, Kevvy Mental & Dave Ogilvie, tweaker and Assemblage 23.

Imaginary Monsters will be released on Aug. 9 by Metropolis Records. The video for “In the Dark,” which was independently produced, directed and filmed by the band, will be included as well.

So don’t miss this one – it’s the album you’ve all been waiting for.

Ocean Grove offers ‘Another Place To Stay”

Ocean Grove offers ‘Another Place To Stay”.

Ocean Grove now on tour with the release of its CD

Ocean Grove is an alternative rock band from Ocean Grove, New Jersey with a southern rock and country music sound mixed in. The band is comprised of front-man John Taylor on guitar, Ryan Liestman on keyboards, Greg Garbowsky playing bass and the backbone of the band is Jack Lawless on drums.

They recently self-released an EP called “Another Place to Stay” on June 21, 2011. The album was engineered by Paul Hager who has also worked with acts such as Van Halen, Goo Goo Dolls and American Hi-Fi in the famous Sterling Sound Recording Studio.

The band names artists such as The Beach Boys, Tom Petty, and Weezer as their greatest influences.

“Another Place to Stay” offers a variety of sounds with songs such as “I Want You in Love,” “Dream Date” and “Our House.”

The song “I Want You in Love” combines Taylor’s alternative style vocals with country inspired beats and rhythms. The marriage of the music and lyrics set the tone for a very emotional song.

“Dream Date” with its soft acoustical tones and poetic lyrics tells a story of yearning and heartbreak in need of redemption.

“Our House” is an acoustic upbeat song telling a story of happiness and satisfaction with the life at hand while making plans for the future. It is a toe tapping hand clapping song.

The band has played with famous artists such as Stevie Wonder, Brad Paisley and Vince Gill. They have also played on over 50 television shows.

“Our inspiration is life,” Taylor, the bands vocalist said in a recent release.

Ocean Grove is currently on tour with the band He Is We. For more information about the tour and album visit their website.

Giving southern rock a new twist

“You Come Up Like a Rose,” the latest single by The Northstar Session adds a new twist to southern rock. The song has Eagles’ style harmonies and southern blues guitar orientations. It gives a feeling of coming home which makes the listener want to sing along with the first spin. It is not hard to imagine slow dancing to this song alongside a candle lit dinner or taking it for a southern swing around the dance floor.

The song is off of The Northstar Session’s album, “Winter Collection.” It was featured on the second season of NBC’s, Parenthood, and the video can be seen below.

The Northstar Session is a classic style rock band from Southern California. The lineup includes lead singer and guitarist Matt Szlachetka, drummer Kane McGee and keyboardist Dave Basaraba. All three members of this trifecta are writers and singers.

The band has several other albums, so for more about The Northstar Session or to hear more of their music, visit their website and catch them on Facebook.
